Instructions: Provide a brief definition of Directive Principles of State Policy and discuss three measures taken by the Government to implement the DPSPs.

Solution:

Directive Principles of State Policy:
  • These are a set of guidelines for the state that must be kept in mind while formulating laws and policies for the people.
  • The government has enacted many laws and schemes to ensure the implementation of these Directive Principles.
National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA):
  • In order to guarantee the Right to Work and adequate livelihood, the government implemented the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act in 2005.
  • It guarantees 100 days of employment in a year to every rural household whose adult members are willing to do manual unskilled labour.
Prohibition on liquor sales:
  • Article 47 of the Indian Constitution directs the states to prohibit the sale of liquor and other intoxicating drinks.
  • In order to implement this directive, the governments of Gujarat and Bihar have banned the sale of liquor in their respective states.
Protection of weaker sections:
  • To protect the interests of weaker sections, seats are reserved in educational institutions for students of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
  • Scholarships are also provided to students from these categories in order to encourage and promote them to study further.
