The white colour of flower and dwarf height are examples of recessive traits.
Mendel worked on garden pea and reported the results of his crosses involving seven different characteristics, each with two contrasting traits. A trait is defined as a variation in the physical appearance of a heritable characteristic.
The characteristics included plant height, seed texture, seed colour, flower colour, pea-pod size, pea-pod colour, and flower position. For the characteristic of flower colour, for example, the two contrasting traits were white versus violet where white was dominant and violet was recessive. Similarly, tall height was dominant over dwarf height.
