  1. The word ‘aves’ refers to ‘bird’.
  2. These are warm-blooded vertebrates with various flight adaptations.

Characteristics of class Aves:

  1. The hind limbs are modified for walking, swimming, clasping, etc.
  2. The forelimb contains three clawless digits while the hind limbs have four digits with claws.
  3. Oils glands are present at the base of the tail.
  4. They do not have teeth but possess a beak that helps in tearing, crushing, sipping, etc.
  5. Bones are hollow and hence are light and spongy due to the presence of air cavities or air sacs.
  6. Fertilization is internal.
  7. They lay eggs (i.e., oviparous).
  8. Respiration takes place through the lungs.
  9. Examples: Doves, pigeons, falcons, ducks, sparrow, flamingo.
