The reformers and nationalist leaders believed that education was important to promote unity and to bring about meaningful changes in the society.
To reform and promote education, national educational institutions started coming up.
Some of these institutions were:
Deccan Education Society: G. G. Agarkar, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and M. G. Ranade established the Deccan Education Society in 1884, at Pune.
First Women’s University: In 1916, D. K. Karve established the first Indian Women University in Maharashtra, which is currently known as S. N. D. T. Women’s University.
Visva Bharati University: Along the lines of national education and universal brotherhood, the Visva Bharati University was established by Rabindranath Tagore in Bengal.
Jamia Millia Islamia: When the national movement was at its peak, a team consisting of Mohammed Ali, Shoukath Ali, Dr. Zakir Hussain, and M.A. Ansari established the Jamia Millia Islamia in Aligarh.
