Question

Mention the essential material (chemicals) to prepare soap in the laboratory. Describe in brief the test for determining the nature (acidic/alkaline) of the reaction mixture of saponification reaction.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1:

The long-chain carboxylic acids that contain sodium and potassium salts are called soaps.

Step 2:

In the laboratory the soap is prepared with these three essential materials:

(i) Sodium chloride (NaCl)

(ii) Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)

(iii) Vegetable Oil

Step 3:

The finished soap is checked using litmus paper after the saponification process.

The red litmus solution turns blue with the addition of soap solution, indicates the soap generated after the reaction mixture of saponification reaction is basic or alkaline in nature.

The presence of free alkali ions indicates that the saponification reaction is alkaline in nature. Thus, the solution of soap is smooth to touch.
