Functions

1. Apical meristems

  1. It is responsible for the increase in length of the plant and thus helps in the primary growth of the plant.
  2. Apical meristems are found at the tips of roots, stems, and branches and increase the length of roots, stems, and branches.

2. Intercalary meristems

  1. Their main function is to increase the length of internodes.
  2. Intercalary meristem is present in the nodal region.
  3. These meristems are found in monocotyledons such as grasses.
  4. They are present in between the permanent tissues.
  5. They are derived from the apical meristem.

3. Lateral meristems

  1. Their function is to increase the thickness of the stem and root.
  2. Lateral meristem is present along the longitudinal axis of stem and root.
  3. Examples of lateral meristem are vascular cambium and cork cambium meristem.
