Mention the importance of LH surge during menstrual cycle.

Menstrual cycle

Menstrual cycle refers to the cyclic changes in the female reproductive tract of the female primates including human beings that are associated with the release of ova. It involves multiple phases like menstruation, follicular phase, ovulatory phase and luteal phase.

Follicular phase

● The follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone released from the anterior pituitary under the influence of hypothalamus plays a major role in the follicular phase.

● Under the influence of $FSH$, the primary follicle in the ovary grows to become a fully mature Graffian follicle.

Ovulatory phase

$LH$and $FSH$ attain a peak level in the middle of the cycle (about the $14th$ day).

Rapid secretion of $LH$ leading to its maximum level during the mid-cycle called $LH$ surge which induces rupture of Graafian follicle and thereby the release of secondary oocyte. This process is called ovulation.

Importance of $LH$ surge

$LH$ surge causes ovulation.
