The fibre crops are cotton and jute:
Cotton: Cotton has originated in India. It was first cultivated by the Harappan culture or Indus Valley Civilization. The long staple variety is considered best for producing fine and strong quality cloth.
Conditions for Growth:
Temperature: Between 22 to 40 degree celsius
Rainfall : Average annual rainfall of 60 - 100 cm suits the plant. One condition that needs to be fulfilled is that the plant requires 210 frost free days in a year.
Jute: It is a long soft shiny fibre that resists stretching.
Conditions for Growth:
Temperature: Between 22 and 27 degree celsius
Rainfall: 150cm per year
Soil: It grows well in the alluvial soils of delta regions as well as loamy soils.
