Solution

Definition: The process of separating the constituent particles in the mixture based on the difference in its size or color using a hand is called hand picking.

Principle: This method of separation is possible when there is a clear difference in the size or color of the constituent particles.

  1. When the components of the mixture are sufficiently large in size, they may be separated by a simple hand-picking method
  2. In other words, large-sized impurities like pieces of dirt, stone, and husk can be removed from wheat, rice, or pulses by this method.
  3. This method is convenient only when the quantity of such impurities is usually not very large.

Examples:

  1. Black stones can be picked by hand when mixed with rice grains.
  2. The mixture of two pulses can be separated by the hand-picking method.
