Question

Mention the properties of magnetic field lines due to a straight current-carrying conductor.

Open in App
Solution

The properties of magnetic field lines due to a straight current-carrying conductor are:

  1. The magnetic lines of force are in the form of concentric circles with their center at the center of the current-carrying conductor.
  2. The plane containing the lines of force around a straight current-carrying conductor is perpendicular to the length of the conductor.
  3. The number of lines of force increase with an increase in the strength of the current in the conductor.
  4. The length of the conductor is normal to the plane of a page, the direction of magnetic field lines is in the anti-clockwise direction, and in the plane of the page if the current in the conductor is flowing in a direction out of the page.
  5. If the direction of current is reversed, i.e., the current is flowing in a direction into the page, the direction of magnetic field lines is in the clockwise direction and in the plane of the page.
