Solution

Significance of Oxygen:

Oxygen is the most essential component of various biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

The oxygen from the atmosphere is used for the processes such as respiration, photosynthesis, combustion, and decomposition.

  1. Respiration: The oxygen used from the atmosphere is used for the oxidation of glucose and other substrates and releases carbon dioxide, water, and energy.
  2. Photosynthesis: Plants prepare food in the form of starch by utilizing carbon dioxide and water and release oxygen which is utilized by other organisms.
  3. Combustion: For obtaining energy by the burning of organic fuels such as wood in industries oxygen is required.
  4. Decomposition: Oxygen is required for the breakdown of organic waste The organic wastes obtained from living organisms are biodegradable because of some aerobic bacteria that convert organic waste materials into inorganic materials in the presence of oxygen by releasing carbon dioxide and water.
