Question

Mention the type of compounds formed when small atoms like H,C and N get trapped inside the crystal lattice of transition metals. Also give physical and chemical characteristics of these compounds.

Solution

  • When small atoms like H, C and N get trapped inside the crystal lattice of transition metals then the formation of interstitial compounds takes place.
  • Interstitial compounds are non-stoichiometric compounds.
  • Example: Stainless steel, TiC etc

Physical and chemical characteristics of interstitial compounds:

  • Interstitial compounds are closely packed thus, they possess high melting points as compared to other pure metals.
  • Interstitial compounds are very hard because the voids of such compounds are occupied by other atoms.
  • Interstitial compounds maintain their metallic conductivity.
  • Interstitial compounds are chemically inert.
