Definition of non-metals: The elements which form negative ions by gaining or accepting electrons are called non-metals.

Oxygen(O):

  1. Oxygen is needed for many living organisms to survive. It helps organisms grow, reproduce, and turn food into energy.
  2. It gives our cells the ability to break down food to get the energy to survive. It is essential for breathing to maintain life, for burning fuels, etc.

Nitrogen(N):

  1. Nitrogen is also a non-metals that are essential in our everyday life. Nitrogen is necessary for amino acids and nucleic acids.
  2. It is needed by plants and thus important for food chain since plants are the foundation of the biosphere.
