Question

Mention three adaptations found in the plants to reduce transpiration.

Open in App
Solution

Transpiration:

  1. The phenomenon by which plants lose water by evaporation is called transpiration.
  2. The stomata are pores present on the leaves through which water vapor escapes into the atmosphere.

Adaptations to reduce transpiration:

  1. Spines instead of leaves: The leaves in the desert plants are modified into spines to decrease the surface area for transpiration.
  2. Thick cuticle on leaves: A waxy layer called cuticle on the surface of the leaves lower the transpiration rate.
  3. Sunken stomata: The stomatal pores are not directly exposed to the leaves, reducing transpiration.

Adaptation such as spines, thick cuticles, and sunken stomata helps the plant to reduce the rate of transpiration.
