Three causes of scarcity of water in our country:
- Pattern of rainfall: Rainfall is not even every year. Also, some parts of the country get more rainfall, while some parts like Rajasthan get very little rainfall.
- Loss of water: Water shortage occurs in areas located on deforested slopes because of excess run-off. It also occurs in rocky areas where rainwater cannot seep into the ground, as in parts of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Bihar etc.
- Overuse: Delhi gets it's water supply from five rivers. Yet there is water shortage due to extreme overuse of water in metro cities.
