Question

Mention three factors affecting the rate of dissolution.

Open in App
Solution

Solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more components. A solution is formed by the combination of solute and solvent.

  • The substance which is present in the same physical state of solution is called solvent.
  • If both the substance are in same physical state, then substance present in greater quantity is considered as solvent.
  • The substance present in lesser quantity is called solute.

For example, Common salt in water.

Solute- Common salt , Solvent – Water

Definition of solubility or dissolution

The quantity of solute required to saturate 100g of solvent at a particular temperature is called solubility.

Factors affecting solubility

  1. Size of solute particles

When the particle become smaller, the surface are increases. When the surface area exposed to solvent increases, solubility increases.

2. Stirring

Stirring brings more of the solvent in contact with the solute. Thus rate of formation of solution increases.

3. Temperature

The solubility of a gas in a liquid always decreases with rise in temperature. But the solubility of most of the solids in water usually increases with rise in temperature.
