The metal compound 'x' may be sodium carbonate . When it reacts with dilute sulphuric acid , it results in the formation of sodium sulphate and carbon dioxide gas is liberated. The effervescence is seen due to evolution of carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide gas extinguishes the burning candle.
