Question

Metal M crystallizes in a simple cubic crystal and has a packing efficiency of 52.2%. When it combines with a halogen X2 and forms MX, it forms a NaCl type crystal with a cation to anion size ratio of 1:2. Packing efficiency (%) of the MX crystal is

Solution

We know, packing efficiency=Volume of sphere in unit cellTotal volume of unit cell
For a simple cubic crystal η=43πr3(2r)3×100=52.243π×100=52.2×8
Since MX crytalillizes in NaCl type of crystal, it is FCC type of crystal.
Thus for MX, η=4×43π((rc)3+(ra)3)2(rc+ra)3×100 = 4×43π(ra2+ra)3(2(rc+ra))3×100 (Since given rcra=0.5)
=4(98)27×52.2×8=69.6%
