Question

Metal oxides react with non-metal oxide to form a salts. Explain with example of a balanced chemical reaction.

Open in App
Solution

Reaction between a metal oxide and non-metal oxide:

  • Metal oxides are commonly basic in nature and non-metal oxides are acidic in nature.
  • When a metal oxide reacts with non-metal oxide, they both neutralize each other resulting in the formation of a salt.
  • Example: When a metallic oxide (Calcium oxide) reacts with non-metallic oxide (carbon dioxide), leading to the formation of Calcium carbonate.
  • The balanced chemical reaction can be represented as:

CaO(s)+CO2(g)ā†’CaCO3(s)(Calciumoxide)(Carbondioxide)(Calciumcarbonate)
