Solution

As the size of the atom increases due to increase in the number of shells the effect of nuclear charge is less, hence metallic character increases that is tendency in giving electrons increases from top to bottom as we move in a group and whereas in a period as proton number increases but no change in shells as we move from left to right size decreases hence metallic nature decreases in a period. Vice-versa for non-metallic.
Hence, answers to blanks are (1) top, (2) bottom, (3) right, (4) left, (5) bottom, (6) top, (7) left, (8) right.
