Reaction:
Mg2++Ca(OH)2→Mg(OH)2+CaCl2dil.HCl−−−−→MgCl2.6H2O
MgCl2.6H2O→MgCl2.2H2OdryHCl−−−−→MgCl2
Magnesium chloride obtained by any of the above methods is fused and mixed with sodium chloride and calcium chloride in the temperature range of 973−1023K. The molten mixture is electrolysed. Magnesium is liberated at the cathode and chlorine is evolved at graphite anode.
