Question

Metals react with non-metals to form stable compound called ___________ compounds.

Solution

Ionic bond

An ionic bond is formed by the electrostatic forces of attraction between positive and negative ions. It is formed by the transfer of electrons between metal and non-metal.

Example: In NaCl, Sodium(metal) atomic number is 11 and Chlorine(non-metal) atomic number is 17

  • Electronic configuration of Sodium = 2,8,1
  • Electronic configuration of Chlorine = 2,8,7
  • Sodium loses one electron to attain stable electronic configuration and chlorine gains 1 to become stable.

Therefore, Metals react with non-metals to form a stable compound called ionic or electrovalent compounds.
