Question

Metals react with water to give out metal oxide and hydrogen
but everywhere in books it is given as;K + H2O=KOH + H2
But according to first statement it should actually be
;K+H2O=K2O + H2
Then which is true and why?

Metals react with oxygen to form metal oxides.Some metals react with water to form hydroxides and hydrogen gas. However, some metals do not react with water but steam to form metal oxides and hydrogen gas. Some metals react with dilute hydrochloric acid to form metal chloride and hydrogen gas.
