Question

Metals such as Sodium and Potassium are kept immersed in Kerosene. Why?

Open in App
Solution

Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K) are the metals placed in the s-block of the periodic table and they are very reactive.

In the presence of Oxygen (O2) which is present in the air, Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K) may explode or catch fire which can be very dangerous to handle due to their high reactivity.

That is why Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K) are kept immersed in the Kerosene to avoid the contact with air.

In kerosene Sodium (Na) and Potassium (K) remains unreactive and are easy to handle.
