Metals with Acids
Most of the acids react with metals to form salts and evolve hydrogen gas.
Metal + Acid → Salt + Hydrogen gas
Curd and other sour foodstuffs such as vinegar, lemon juice, orange juice, etc. should not be kept in metal vessels (like copper vessels or brass vessels). This is because curd and other sour foodstuffs contain dilute acids which can react with the metal of the vessel to form poisonous metal compounds which can cause food poisoning and damage our health.
To store foodstuffs which contain dilute acids, we can use vessels made of stainless steel. Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, nickel, and chromium. It is hard, does not rust, and does not react with dilute acids.
How can we prevent the reaction of aluminium vessels with food stuff that contains acids?
