Question

Methane molecule is a non-polar molecule. Explain.

Open in App
Solution

The molecular formula of methane is CH4.
Polarity is decided on the basis of electronegativity difference of combining atoms.
Electronegativity difference between carbon and hydrogen is negligible.
Thus, electron is shared equally between carbon and hydrogen. Due to this, partial charge is created neither on carbon nor on hydrogen atom.

Hence, methane is a nonpolar molecule.
