Question

Mg can reduce NO3 to NH3 in basic medium.
NO3(aq)+Mg(s)+H2OMg(OH)2(s)+OH(aq)+NH3(g)
A 25.0 mL sample of NO3 solution was treated with Mg(s). The NH3(g) was passed into 100 mL of 0.15 N HCl.
The excess of HCl required 32.10 mL of 0.10 N NaOH for neutralization. What was the molarity of NO3 ions in the original sample?

A
0.47125

Solution

The correct option is A 0.47125
Milliequivalents of NH3 formed =Milliequivalents of HCl used =100×0.1532.10×0.10=11.79

Here, n-factor of NH3 is 1 (acid - base reaction).

For redox change,

Milliequivalents of NH3 for n-factor 8 =8×11.79=94.32
Normality of NO3=94.3225=3.77
Molarity of NO3=3.778=0.47125
