The reaction can be written as:
Mg+CO2MgO+CO
here oxidation number of Mg changes from 0 to +2 thus it is acting as a reducing agent. Similarly, the oxidation number of C is reduced from +4 to +2. Thus it is acting as an oxidizing agent.
