Surfactants form micelle which are spherical particles as shown in figure, with a hydrophobic interior and a hydrophilic exterior. Hydrophilic exterior helps to dissolve in water.
Micelles formation takes place over a certain concentration as shown in figure. Soaps and detergents acts as surfactants (gets water to wet the fibres) and as emulsifiers (separates the dirt from the fibres and suspends it so that water can rinse it away).
