Minamata disease is a neurological disease caused by severe mercury poisoning. It was first discovered in Minamata city, in Japan, in 1956. The cause was methylmercury in the industrial wastewater from Chisso corporations chemical factory. The mercury got accumulated in fish in Minamata Bay. People who ate these fish got the poisoning which resulted in ataxia, numbness in hands and feet, muscle weakness, paralysis, coma and death.
