13.4 per cent of India‟ population is Muslim and they are considered to be a marginalised community in India. Over the years, in comparison to other communities, they have been deprived of the benefits of socio-economic development.
Muslim customs and practices such as wearing a burqa, sporting a long beard, etc. are at times very distinct from what is seen as mainstream.
These become ways of identifying Muslim people. Thus, they tend to be identified differently and people think they are not like the rest of us"
