• 13.4 per cent of India‟ population is Muslim and they are considered to be a marginalised community in India. Over the years, in comparison to other communities, they have been deprived of the benefits of socio-economic development.
• Muslim customs and practices such as wearing a burqa, sporting a long beard, etc. are at times very distinct from what is seen as mainstream.
• These become ways of identifying Muslim people. Thus, they tend to be identified differently and people think they are not like the rest of us"
