Minamata disease was caused by the methylmercury poisoning, first reported in Japan in May 1956 when the local population of the Minamata City consumed the contaminated water containing methylmercury being discharged by the chemical factory, Chisso Co. Ltd. The symptoms of the poisoning included neuronal lesions, ataxia, auditory disturbances, and tremors. There were 2252 officially declared sufferers, out of which 1043 have reprtedly died.
