Question

Mitochondria and plastids have their own DNA (genetic material). What is known about their fate during nuclear division like mitosis?

Solution

Fate of mitochondria and plastid

Though mitochondria and chloroplast have their own DNA, they do not contribute to nuclear division. Their genetic material is considered as extrachromosomal DNA as it is not present inside the nucleus.

Distribution of mitochondria and plastid after mitosis

During cytoplasmic division (cytokinesis), these organelles get distributed randomly between the two daughter cells.
