Question

Mixing of acetone with chloroform takes place with a reduction in volume. What type of deviation from Raoult's law is shown in this case?

Solution

This negative deviation between the intermolecular force of attraction between the molecules of acetone and chloroform is much stronger which result in a decrease in volume of the solution as well as the tendency of the molecule to escape from the liquid due to which vapour pressure of the solution decreases.
