Molar volume is the volume occupied by 1 mol of any (ideal) gas at standard temperature and pressure (STP : 1 atmospheric pressure, 0C). Show that it is 22.4 litres.

Here, R=8.31 J mol1K1

T=0C=273 K;n=1 mole

P=1 atm=0.76 m of Hg column
=0.76×13.6×103×9.8=1.013×105 N/m2

To prove V=22.4 litre

Using ideal gas equation PV=nRT,

V=nRTP

V=1×8.31×2731.013×105=22.4×103m3

V=22.4 litres.
