Question

Molarity of H2SO4 is 18M. If density d is 8g cm3, calculate its concentration in mol kg1 solvent (H2O), i.e., molality.

Open in App
Solution

Molarity is defined as number of moles of solute dissolved in per litre of solution.
Molarity, M=nV
Given tha M=18 M and density of solution ρ=8g/mL
mass of 1 mL solution = 8g
or mass of 1L (1000mL) solution =1000×8=8000g
In 1000mL solution, number of moles of H2SO4is:
n=Molarity×Volume(L)=18×1=18mol
mass of solution=mass of solvent + mass of solute
or, msolution=msolvent+Molar mass of H2SO4×number of moles
upon substitution we get
8000=msolvent+98×18
msolvent=80001764=6236g=6.236kg
molality is number of moles of solute present in per kg of solvent
m=n/msolvent=18/6.236=2.886 molal
