Question

Mole fraction of methanol in its aqueous solution is 0.5. the concentration of solution in terms of percent by mass of methanol is :

A 36

B 50

C 64

D 72

Open in App
Solution

Mole fraction of methanol =0.5

Mole fraction of water=1-0.5=0.5(Total sum of mole fractions is 1)

Molecular mass of methanol(CH3OH)=32g

Molecular mass of water=18g

Mass of methanol present in solution=0.5*32g=16g

Mass of water present in solution=0.5*18g=9g

Mass of solution =16g+9g=25g

% by Mass of methanol
=mass of methanol/mass of solution
=16g/25g *100
=0.64*100
=64%
