Monosaccharides contain carbonyl group hence are classified as aldose or ketose. If the carbonyl group is an aldehyde attached to C1, the monosaccharide is an Aldose. If the carbonyl group is a ketone attached to C2, the monosaccharide is a Ketose.

Fructose has 6 carbons in the straight chain. Its molecular formula is C6H12O6. Fructose contains a ketone group. Hence, it is placed in the class of Ketohexoses. The structure of fructose is given below.
