Ozone is found in the upper part of atmosphere and it acts as a shield absorbing ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. UV rays are very harmful for living organisms, so ozone layer protects earth from these rays. But due to wide use of chloroflurocarbons (CFC's), the ozone layer is depleting. So, regarding the deleterious effects of the ozone depletion, an international initiative was taken. Montreal protocol, which calls for appropriate action to protect the ozone layer from human activities was passed in the year 1987. It was signed at Montreal, Canada. It became effective in 1989. Later, it was followed by two amendments- one in 1990 in London and other in 1992 in Copenhagen.
