Solution

The correct option is D I, II and III
A large section of the world's population does not have access to adequate quantity of food to meet their nutritional requirements. Many people cannot afford variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes, fishes and meat. Hence they suffer from micronutrient deficiency in their body. The issues related to micronutrient deficiency generally goes unnoticed, hence this phenomenon is termed as ‘hidden hunger'.

Following a diet that lacks essential micronutrients such as iron, vitamin A, iodine and zinc can have serious effects like increased risk for diseases, reduced lifespan and reduced mental abilities. Hence statements I, II and III are correct.

Some of the common disorders due to deficiency of micronutrients are listed below-
  • Deficiency of vitamin A causes a disease named night blindness due to which individuals are unable to see in dim light. Lack of vitamin A also causes other problems related to vision, growth etc.
  • Iron deficiency causes less production of haemoglobin in the body which leads to anemia.
  • Iodine deficiency leads to goiter (swelling of thyroid glands) and hypothyroidism (low level of thyroid hormones) that affects growth and metabolism of the body.
  • Zinc deficiency causes alopecia (thinning of hair and hair loss resulting into baldness) skin issues, anemia, and growth related problems.
  • Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) is required for nucleotide and DNA synthesis to support cell division. Deficiency of cyanocobalamin increase risk of miscarriage and neural tube (brain and spinal cord) defects.
