Question

More the intermolecular force of attraction, __________________will be the intermolecular space between the molecules.

Open in App
Solution

  • Intermolecular force

The intermolecular force of attraction is a force through which the molecules or atoms are held together.

The force of attraction is maximum in solids(due to the tight packing of molecules) and minimum in gases.

  • Intermolecular space

The Intermolecular space is the space between two molecules or atoms.

In solids, it is very little. In liquids, it is more than the solids but less than gases. In gases, it is maximum.

  • The intermolecular space depends upon the force of attraction between the molecules or atoms.
  • As the force of attraction increases the intermolecular space decreases.

Therefore, the more the intermolecular force of attraction, the less will be the intermolecular space between the molecules.
