Solution

Conduction of electricity in liquids:

  • When an acid, base, or salt is dissolved in water, the molecules become electrically charged particles known as ions.
  • Solutions containing ions conduct electricity. Because it contains few ions, pure water is a weak conductor.
  • Ions have the capacity to pass through a solution and create an electric current when they are present.
  • Ions are not present in significant quantities in pure water or sugar solution.
  • Sugar molecules do not break down into ions when dissolved. As a result, these solutions cannot transport an electric current.
  • The acids, bases, and salts ionize in an aqueous solution to conduct electricity.
  • That is why tap water is a good conductor of electricity as it has salts but distilled water does not conduct electricity.

Hence, most liquids that conduct electricity are solutions of acids, bases, and salts.
