Question

Most string instruments have an air chamber. Why?

Open in App
Solution

  1. All string instruments have an air chamber.
  2. It is because the air column is set into forced vibrations when the strings are made to vibrate.
  3. Since the soundbox has a large area, it sets a large volume of air into a vibration of the same frequency as that of that string.
  4. Thus resonance occurs and a loud sound is produced.
