Mr. Mercury, Ms. Slick, Ms. Joplin, and Mr. Morrison are divisional heads of an MNC company heading their respective units in four regions of the world. Mr. Mercury guides his unit and involves them during decision making, while Ms. Slick and Mr. Morrison decide the policies and programmes but leave it up to their units to complete their tat on their own and Ms Joplin creates an environment of fear and punishment and control her unit's activities by limiting their creative and innovative ideas. Each of these unit heads are allotted supervisors to work under them. Mr. Mercury meets his supervisor every week to check on the work allocated by the supervisor. Ms. Slick and Mr. Morrison give complete autonomy to their respective supervisors and encourage autonomy to subordinates under their supervisors. Ms. Joplin's supervisor is held accountable and responsible for all activities in the organisation by ensuring that all roles and responsibilities are suitably allocated for all subordinates.

(i) Identify and explain the leadership styles undertaken by the four-unit heads? Also explain the flow of communication as a leaders.

(ii) Which features of supervision can you identify for the supervisors working under the four-unit heads?

(i) Mr. Mercury is a democratic leader which is a centralised authority, who guides the supervisor and the team and involves them in decision making. The flow of communication is participative between the leader and his subordinates.

Ms. Slick and Mr. Morrison both are laissez-faire leaders which means that they do not intervene in the tasks and activities to be undertaken by the supers,' subordinates. The flow of communication involves delegation following a 'let them approach.

Ms. Joplin is an autocratic or authoritarian leader, who has absolute control authority over the policies and procedures of her unit. The flow of communication downward from autocratic leader to her supervisor/subordinates.

(ii) The features of supervision highlighted are as follows :

(a) Mr. Mercury meets his supervisor face to face to get an update on all the and activities in his unit.

(b) Ms. Joplin's supervisor is held accountable and responsible for the tasks of t unit's employees and limited to their own business unit.

(c) Ms. Slick's and Mr. Morrison's supervisors are given autonomy making sure 4 roles and responsibilities are allocated.
