MSO4 is the formula of sulphate of metal M. Write down the formula of its :
i) Hydroxide ii) Chlorite iii) Chloride
iv) Nitrate v) Nitrite vi) Peroxide
vii) Chromate viii) Phosphate.

Solution

For given formula of sulphate of metal, its valency is +2.
(i) OH is hydroxide ion. By balancing charge, formula of metal hydroxide ion is M(OH)2.
(ii) ClO2 is chlorite ion. We need 2 such ions for charge balance. Hence metal chlorite M(ClO2)2.
(iii) Chloride has Cl ion. Hence, metal chloride is MCl2.
(iv) NO3 is nitrate ion. By charge balance, metal nitrate is M(NO3)2.
(v) NO2 is nitrite ion. Hence M(NO2)2 is metal nitrite.
(vi) Peroxide has O ion. By charge balance, metal peroxide is MO2.
(vii) CrO24 is chromate ion. Hence, by balancing charges metal chromate is M(CrO4).
(viii) (PO4)3 is phosphate ion. By charge balance, metal phosphate is M3(PO4)2.
