Solution

The correct option is C Glossopharyngeal nerve
The cranial nerve-Ix or the glossopharyngeal nerve originates from the medulla of the brainstem. It is a mixed nerve because it is both sensory and motor in function. It innervates the muscles as well as the mucous membranes of tongue and pharynx. It brings the sensation of taste from the posterior 1/3rd part of the tongue and also stimulates the secretion of saliva.
A. Facial nerve innervates face, neck, taste buds and salivary glands.
B. Trochlear nerve innervates superior oblique eye muscles.
C. Glossopharyngeal nerve innervates muscles and mucous membranes of tongue and pharynx.
D. Trigeminal nerve innervates forehead, maxilla and mandible.
Hence, the correct answer is 'Glossopharyngeal nerve'
