Solution

Let the number of hens = xLet the number of goats = ySince, the number of heads is 40, so x + y = 40 .....1Number of legs of 1 hen = 2Number of legs of x hens = 2xNumber of legs of 1 goat = 4Number of legs of y goats =4yNow, 2x + 4y = 112x + 2y = 56 .......2Subtracting 1 from 2, we gety = 56 - 40 = 16So, put the value of y in 1, we getx + 16 = 40 x = 40 - 16 = 24So, number of hens = 24Number of goats = 16
