Myxoedema or Gull’s disease is caused by deficiency (hyposecretion) of thyroid hormone in adults. This disease is characterized by puffy appearance due to the accumulation of fat in the subcutaneous tissue. This is the consequence of low metabolic rate. The patients lack alertness, intelligence and initiative. They also suffer from low body temperature, slow heart beat and retarded sexual development. This disease can be treated by administration of thyroid hormones.
