Identify the gases that are evolved at anode and cathode during the electrolysis of acidified water?
In the electrolysis of water (acidified), the gases that are evolved at anode and cathode respectively are oxygen gas and hydrogen gas. Hydrogen ions gain electrons from the cathode and form hydrogen gas, oxygen ions gives electrons to the anode and forms oxygen gas.
The balanced decomposition reaction of water is given below:
2H2O (l) 🡪 2H2 (g) + O2 (g)
