1,2−Diols are oxidized to ketones and /or aldehyde by periodic acid HIO4. Periodic acid reacts with vicinal diol to form a cyclic intermediate. Keto and alcohol groups at vicinal position may be oxidised in some cases. Reaction takes place because iodine is in highly positive oxidation sate (+ 7).
