$1, 2 -$ Diols are oxidized to ketones and /or aldehyde by periodic acid $H I O_{4}$ . Periodic acid reacts with vicinal diol to form a cyclic intermediate. Keto and alcohol groups at vicinal position may be oxidised in some cases. Reaction takes place because iodine is in highly positive oxidation sate (+ 7).
